So last night, the power went out. It was really sudden, and I don't think it was even raining. We lose power pretty often out here. And it was about 11:00, which made me automatically think, "I knew I should be going to bed earlier!" Anyway, at first I panicked, because in horror movies, the Bad Guy always shuts off the power in preparation for the Big Scary Stalking of the unsuspecting victim. But I know my way around in the dark, so I felt my way down the hall to my room and got my itty-bitty flashlight. It doesn't make much light, but at least there wasn't total darkness anymore. I used that to get to the closet under the stairs and grab my dad's Snake Light. It's this really cool flashlight we got him for when he has to use both hands to fix something and he still needs a light. The "neck" twists around so you can hang it wherever. It's neat.

So then I went upstairs because I heard Jazzie thrashing around in her cage. The lights were off upstairs, but she usually has the streetlights, and that's when I figured the power must be out on the whole street. (I calmed down. No scary stalkers were after me.) I talked to Jazzie for a few minutes, which usually makes me feel weird. It just calmed me down, really. I think the sound of my own voice was soothing. And I found two more flashlights (one big, one little) in Courtney's room. So I covered up Jazzie's cage, then ran back downstairs to answer the phone. (Luckily, we have one phone that isn't cordless.) My neighbors had called to see if I was okay. They confirmed that I wasn't the only one without power.

I wandered back to my room, positioned the Snake Light over my door, and started to get ready for bed. My mom called next, denying me permission to go the movies with Greg (darn) and suggesting that I ask my grandma for a wake-up call in case the power wasn't back by morning. I called my grandma and explained; she agreed to wake me up. Then I finished getting ready for bed, which was awkward and a little creepy. I finally fell asleep around a quarter to midnight.

So I woke up this morning, dismayed that the electricity wasn't back. And I was so tired again. I started reasoning that if my power was out, my piano teacher's power might be out, too, so I wouldn't have to go to work. My grandma called and woke me up, so I called Mrs. Maus and asked her about her power. She said hers was fine. I reluctantly got ready to go, again with difficulty. You don't realize how much you need something (in this case, electric lights) until you don't have them anymore.

So work was fine. I was a little late, though. I wanted so much to go back home and get back into bed. I helped Mrs. Maus a little with an online store she's making. From what I gauged, she knows nothing about HTML. It made me feel smart, despite my never-quite-work-right layouts. She asked me to help her again tomorrow, which I will happily do.

When I got home, I warily flipped the light switch, and lo and behold, there was light! I was so happy. The clocks were blinking 2:55, which means the large construction trucks I saw this morning, and again around lunchtime, were here to fix the power. Whatever they did, I thank them heartily. I chatted with Jazzie a bit more, then took a (mostly) uninterrupted and much-needed nap. I woke up feeling wonderfully refreshed. Sleep is good. Naps are great.

Neat. Rajni linked to The Infinite Teen Slang Dictionary. My curiosity led to this:

lindsay n. a car. "Dude, that lindsay is irritating!" Oh, haha.
greg interj. a retort used to warn someone to back away. "You'd better greg, fool." This I like.
mark n. 1. a woman. 2. contraceptives. "This is a secret mark!" ?????
